Who we are

Founded in 2012, Maqlaqs Gee’tkni is a proudly Native-led and community-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to restore ecosystems through traditional ecological knowledge while promoting healthy lifestyles and sustainable communities.  Maqlaqs Gee’tkni engages youth in Southern Oregon by providing mentorship and skill building through forest restoration and food sovereignty projects. Through this work, Maqlaqs Gee’tkni helps young adults find the stability, support, and encouragement to re-engage with education and career training that resonate with their identities as Native youth and contribute positively to their communities.

Maqlaqs Gee’tkni is led by Executive Director Derek Kimbol, who, with over 25 years of experience with forestry and watershed restoration experience, formed the non-profit to provide a bridge between the systems and resources he has formed connections to in his educational and professional journey and the youth in the Native communities of Southern Oregon.

Mr. Kimbol is a member of the Klamath Tribes, holds a Bachelor's degree from Oregon State University in Environmental Science, and is a dedicated member of his community, coaching sports teams and engaging with local schools.

Maqlaqs Gee’tkni has partnered with the Klamath Tribes, the US Forest Service, Oregon Woods, Inc., the Long Tom Watershed Council, and many others to provide educational and career training for youth through traditional practices, and strengthening the connection between these practices to their daily lives.
