Our Biochar Process

Collection of Woody Debris
Maqlaqs Gaa’tkni works with local governmental agencies and private landowners to identify overgrown forests. Our team then extracts the excess wood - dead branches that pose a fire risk and small trees that are competing for resources with more established trees - primarily with hand tools to minimize our impact on the land.

Small Batch Char Production
Next we partially burn the collected woody debris in custom kilns on site using techniques to maximize containment of carbon. We quench the burning process at just the right time so that the internal structure of the char is optimal for water retention and providing homes for beneficial soil microorganisms.

Preparing for Use
Once cooled, the char is crushed and, if desired, treated with a mixture of nutrients and microorganisms. This BioChar is then ready to be added to soil!
